TEENAGE karate champion Michael Basckin claimed two bronze medals in the space of a couple of hours in Wednesday’s karate competition. Competing in the under-55kg category, 15-year-old Basckin opened his account in the kata category, where competitors are judged akin to gymnasts, based on the performance of their technique, movement and sharpness.

He backed it up in the afternoon to pack a punch and score an equal-third in the combat discipline.

It was due reward for the teenager who puts in a two-hour session six times a week at home, which will help as he heads to the Australian National Championships in Adelaide when he returns to Australia. A strong showing in Adelaide could earn him a call-up to the World Championships side to go to Morocco.
